Little Wandle Code is a fully resourced, all-in-one phonics intervention and assessment programme for early KS3. Beyond the Code is the fourth intervention pathway, with 8 age-appropriate fiction chapter books designed for Key Stage 3 readers whose decoding is secure, but fluency and comprehension need targeted support. Beyond the Code books look like books students' peers are reading and span a range of genres – thriller, sci-fi, horror, mystery, comedy and narrative fiction – reflecting teen reading preferences and providing choice. When Owen Mundy joins a new school, he doesn’t make friends easily. Struggling to communicate with his peers, Owen starts an unlikely friendship with a family of crows in the woods. Somehow, it is easier to speak to them than to his classmates. Can these clever, mischievous creatures help Owen solve a mystery at school – and could they help him make friends? Crow Boyis read during a two-week unit of study, combining modelled and rehearsed reading to build fluency with explicit vocabulary, inference and comprehension strategy instruction. Beyond the Code books are supported by fully resourced and planned scripted lessons and ‘How to’ videos available with the Little Wandle Code subscription. Little Wandle Code’s built-in diagnostic assessments identify students for the Beyond the Code fluency and comprehension pathway from the start of Year 7 or Year 8, or students can progress to it at the end of the Complete the Code phonics intervention pathway.
