Anak Bajang Herds the Wind: A Novel - A Modern Indonesian Retelling of the Ramayana Epic

A powerful reimagining of the ancient Indian Ramayana epic. This retelling of the Ramayana is a deeply Javanese story, shaped by folklore and spiritual reflection. Rama's quest to rescue Sinta from the ogre Rahwana becomes a meditation on imperfection and the human struggle toward goodness. At its center is the anak bajang child—an unseen, mysterious being who restores balance to a world in chaos. Neither god nor hero, the bajang embodies innocence and quiet strength, joined by figures such as the white monkey Anoman and the conflicted ogres Kumbakarna and Prahasta. Written by renowned Indonesian author Sindhunata, this modern classic has been continuously reprinted in Indonesia since its publication in 1983. It is a compelling work of world literature and a rich introduction to Javanese culture.
