The Novels of Thomas Love Peacock

The novels of Thomas Love Peacock have been neglected in comparison to those of his contemporaries Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott, yet his comedy is as subtle and pointed as that of the former, while his succinctness makes him more attractive than the latter. Originally published in 1985, this book was the first to offer a literary analysis of the novels, including the two ironic medieval romances Maid Marian and The Misfortunes of Elphin. The author demonstrates the subtlety, wit and sceptical brilliance of a writer who has much to offer the modern reader. Peacock’s novels are diverse in mood and sophisticated in their appeal and this study represents an innovative approach to his work, which will be of interest to students of nineteenth century English literature.
