The Restless Contemplative - Communion with Christ When Life Won’t Let You Sit Still

In The Restless Contemplative, Maja Whitaker speaks to those who long for communion with Christ but find the traditional picture of contemplative spirituality unreachable. When life is crowded with responsibility, movement, noise, caring for others, neurodiversity, or sheer exhaustion, stillness can feel like a luxury we simply don’t have. With theological depth, pastoral honesty and generous realism, Whitaker dismantles the shame-filled belief that God is only accessible through quiet, consistent, perfectly ordered spiritual disciplines. Drawing on Scripture, the Christian tradition and lived experience, she offers a hopeful reimagining of contemplation – one rooted not in performance, but in presence. Honest, humane and deeply hopeful, The Restless Contemplative reassures us that God is not put off by our limitations – and that communion with Christ is possible even when life won’t let us sit still.
