“Phyllis Zagano has made a unique contribution to the debate on women deacons. This book comes at a pivotal moment, during the application and continuation of the Synod on synodality, whose success or failure depends largely on how the Catholic Church resolves the issue of women's roles in ministry.”—Massimo Faggioli, Trinity College Dublin

The question of women in the ordained diaconate arose in the early 1970s at a Synod of Bishops. It was subsequently considered by three iterations of the International Theological Commission and two pontifical commissions. The Synodality took up the question and asked for a review of the research. As a result of October 2024 Synod discussion, the fact that the question is still open for resolution is now part of the Magisterium.
