Preventing Sexual Violence in Elite UK Universities - Education, Young People and Sexual Consent

Sexual violence is a widespread yet poorly addressed issue in UK universities, affecting a significant proportion of students, especially women and non-binary people. Grounded in feminist theory and student voices, this book explores how universities can better respond to sexual violence through prevention and education. Drawing on a rich dataset of research at elite universities, the book examines the everyday realities of sexual violence – from banter and groping to troubling attitudes toward consent – and critiques dominant behaviours such as lad culture. It proposes a new model rooted in sexual ethics, citizenship and hybrid masculinities, offering practical, policy-relevant insights for creating safer university communities.
