The New Cambridge History of the English Language: Volume 1 - Context, Contact and Development

This volume investigates the Indo-European and Germanic background to the English language and then considers various kinds of contact involving the first speakers of English. It also examines the manner in which English developed and the structural changes which the language underwent in this early period.
