This groundbreaking collection of articles examines practices and policies of genocidal violence in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, constituting the first collection of research solely focused on the social and cultural history of the Holodomor.   Narrating the Holodomor offers new insights into the mechanisms of genocidal violence and unravels the complicated relationship between the past and present through a shift to history from below. The contributors utilize a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches to put forth an inquiry into the grey zone that focuses on agency and lived experience. The volume further demonstrates how personal experiences of mass starvation and, later, the political environment influenced Holodomor historiography and memory discourse.   Examining narratives during and after the famine of 1932–3, the volume recovers the voices of those who lived through the events and examines how decades of silencing shaped transgenerational memory and trauma, integrating personal experiences into a broader historical context.
