Modeling Sculpture - Clodion and the Aesthetics of Terracotta

Modeling Sculpture challenges conventional sculptural histories by unearthing the significance of clay and ceramic statuary in eighteenth-century France. An interdisciplinary study in four chapters, the book centers Clodion's terracottas as a case study for registering in their material, facture, and subject matter the plasticity and dynamism fundamental to the period's aesthetic debates on invention, the picturesque, taste, and even revolutionary sensibility.
