Recently, however, it is becoming clear that an independent and viable Palestinian state may never emerge, thanks to Israeli settlement building and land expropriation in the Occupied Territories. Consquently, thoughts are turning towards the only other option: the one-state solution. In this book, celebrated Palestinian author Ghada Karmi argues that the only practical, permanent solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is for both Palestinians and Israelis to live together in one secular democratic state. Karmi explores alternative solutions and shows, one-by-one, how they are doomed to fail. She examines what really drives this conflict and how the dreams of both sides are incompatible. She picks apart the Zionist project and the aspirations of Palestinians who want to eradicate Israel altogether. Finally, Karmi moves on to suggest the way to a solution - through reparations, and large scale development in the Palestinian areas along the lines of the Marshall Plan.
