The leafy olive groves around Saint-Rémy were a rewarding subject for VanGogh, who was fascinated by the ever-changing colours of the trees. Van Goghwanted to depict the irregular nature of the trees and found that swirlingbrush strokes were best to portray the contorted and colourful groves.
