A post-Civil War frontier novel about a feared lawman trying to lay down his guns and a widow rebuilding her father's estate. American historical saga of redemption, second chances and the pull of old violence. He Hung Up His Guns. His Reputation Never Did. In the years after the war, Sam earned a reputation as a gun-toting enforcer of the law, a man who did whatever justice required. He's left that life behind, or means to. Laura has recently taken charge of her father's estate, working day after day for the sake of her children. When Sam offers to ease her burden, he receives something in return: the chance at the quiet life he always wanted. Then an unexpected guest arrives at Laura's estate, and Sam's past walks in the door with him. Facing his demons head on, Sam comes to the ultimate test of a reformed man: the choice between the life he has built and the retribution he still hungers for. A Higher Calling is the second book in the Sam and Laura series, for readers who love frontier redemption stories, widows rebuilding against the odds and lawmen wrestling with their past. Perfect for fans of John Jakes, Jeff Shaara and Larry McMurtry.
