Despite his visionary status, he was a risk to NATO due to his close connection to the Italian Communist Party (PCI). Moro was kidnapped on 16 March 1978, the day he was set to attend a vote of confidence for a coalition government with the PCI. He was later assassinated after 54 days in captivity.
