Sunderland, 1940
After a bomb attack causes destruction in Sunderland, Polly is determined to do her bit for the war effort. Given her family''s history as shipbuilders, working as a welder on the shipyard seems like the perfect way to help. The shipyard is a whole new world for Polly and the work is exhausting, but her new-found friends on the docks all rally round to help each other out.
It isn''t long though before Polly''s head is turned by a young man, Tommy. It''s clear that the attraction between them is mutual, but Polly can see that she might have competition for Tommy''s affections. And Polly isn''t the only one of the shipyard girls to be facing obstacles in their relationship; on the busy docks the uncertainty of war has thrown up challenges for everyone.
With the threat of more air raids on the horizon and no one knowing what the next day will bring, nothing is ever as simple as it should be . . .
