In November 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Finland. The Red Army, confident of victory in time for Stalin’s birthday, prepared to march into Helsinki within weeks. Facing them was a nation of just under four million people, largely alone and outgunned and outnumbered fifty to one. Yet, against all odds, Finland did not fall. _Defending Finland from Hitler and Stalin_ tells the extraordinary story of how a small democracy survived a squeeze between the twentieth century’s two most ruthless totalitarian powers: Stalin’s Soviet Union and Hitler’s Nazi Germany. At the centre of this struggle stood Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim. The narrative takes the reader into the frozen forests of the Winter War, where Finnish ski troops used encirclement tactics to dissect and destroy mechanized Soviet divisions. It follows the high-wire act of the Continuation War, where Finland navigated a precarious co-belligerency with Nazi Germany – accepting German weapons to survive while refusing to adopt Nazi ideology. Mannerheim’s leadership was defined by hard-nosed pragmatism. He dined with Hitler to secure grain and guns, yet refused to attack Leningrad or deport Finland’s Jewish citizens. He served the Tsar for thirty years, yet became the father of Finnish independence. Perhaps most paradoxically, he received honours from both Imperial Russia and Imperial Germany – two sworn enemies – during the First World War, and was later decorated by Free France, neutral Sweden, and Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Drawing heavily on Finnish archives, through detailed operational analysis and frontline accounts this book reveals the mechanics of small-state deterrence. It culminated in the massive defensive battles of 1944, where Finnish artillery innovations finally halted the Soviet steamroller, allowing Mannerheim to negotiate a peace that preserved Finnish sovereignty. Of all the continental European nations that fought in the Second World War, only two capitals were never occupied by enemy forces: Moscow and Helsinki. This is the story of how that happened.
