English Medium Instruction in Japan

This book examines the development, implementation and implications of English medium instruction (EMI) in Japanese higher education. The internationalisation of higher education has contributed to the rapid expansion of EMI worldwide, and this development has been widely documented in recent research. Building on this body of work, and drawing on policy documents, institutional data, case studies and empirical research conducted in Japan and comparable international contexts, this book examines what this expansion has meant for research, teaching, learning, equity and the governance of Japanese universities. The book offers a critical account of what EMI has achieved to date, identifies ongoing challenges in policy and practice and outlines directions for future research and higher education practice in Japan. This book will be of interest to scholars in language education, international education, bilingual education, language teaching and learning, TESOL, and Japanese studies.
