Fleeting Moments - Nature and Culture in American History

Gunther Barth's book focuses on the relation between nature and culture in American history. He begins with the search for a Northwest Passage by Spanish and English explorers and describes how they learned about American natural phenomena. There is a section showing how nature was adapted to urban settings in cemeteries and in city parks like New York's Central Park and San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
