The result of a collaboration between the Magnum Foundation and the World Monuments Fund, it illustrates the complex and reciprocal relationship between humanity—especially local communities—and the monuments and landscapes they shape. Eleven photographers offer overlapping narratives—those of the monuments that bear witness to history, those of the local communities that are their stewards, and that of the photographer—so that each shot becomes a sedimentation of times and points of view. This series of photographs not only illustrates the diversity of the world’s cultural heritage but also warns us of the threats to its environment.
