Cairo, the ‘Mother of the World,’ has long captivated observers with its vibrant history and monumental architecture. Yet, the pivotal era of the Egyptian monarchy – spanning from the fl awed 1922 declaration of independence to the Free Officers’ movement in July 1952 – remains remarkably understudied. To remedy that lacuna, Royal Cairo: Architecture, Culture, and Urbanism under the Monarchy explores how the city was shaped, physically, culturally, and socially. during these paradoxical decades of formal independence and lingering British colonial control. While subsequent republican narratives often overshadow this period, characterizing it as an externally influenced era of decadence, this book argues that the monarchy laid the foundations of the modern city we know today.
