London, 1654: Jonah Hemp stands on stage in a tavern promising a spectacular performance. The audience is overwhelmed by what they see: slaves performing an African tribal dance, the stuffed corpse of a pirate, grotesque zombies. A Midsummer Night's Nightmare is the follow-up to Paradise Lost. In the previous book we met Jonah and Medeia in completely different surroundings, at a tobacco farm in the Caribbean. Now they find themselves in a great European city and have abandoned their past lives as slave-owner's son and slave. But are they really free? Can they start again, and do new acquaintances wish them well?
